My Approach To Art
Painting
I’d describe my style as Painterly Realism, an approach driven by my love of the painting process and a desire to see clear evidence of it in the final picture. In essence, I am driven to create paintings that look like they enjoy being paintings. Despite my love for drawing, I hardly ever start a painting with an under drawing, I prefer to just start putting the brush strokes down freely and trust that I can find the subject in the paint as I go.

Drawing
I value expressive mark making and economy of line. It is an approach driven in part by my need to simplify things to the point that I understand them, but also a strong aesthetic preference. As in my painting, I prefer to launch straight in to the drawing with some confidence and commitment, I don’t really use feint guidelines or underdrawings – I prefer to get something on the paper and then correct if absolutely necessary. I like to see the process and so don’t mind leaving errors or corrections visible providing they don’t disrupt the narrative (nobody is so good they don’t need an eraser every now and then).
Me
I live and work near Cromer on the North Norfolk coast with my wife and two highly disruptive rescue cats (all regulars in my art and my sketchbook). When I’m not in the studio I’m happily occupied in the kitchen and the veg plot and in the winter I’m quite a big fan of knitting in front of the telly.
